This is a chip found in many laptops that have an Intel CPU which links the CPU to other devices on the motherboards. It is referred to has a platform controller hub and as its always in use can generate a lot of heat but often gets neglected by laptop manufacturers with no active cooling. If you ever wondered how hot is too hot or what the specification guidelines are for this chip it can be found by searching Intel’s website within PDFs and more technical sheets.
Temperature Specifications
- TJMAX is 108 Deg C
- Maximum Temperature 110 Deg C
Shutting down or stuttering?
Intel state it is programmed to shutdown somewhere before 110 Deg C so if your laptop is turning off under gaming consider checking this temperature as most will be around 90 deg C under high load.
There is also a thermal throttle feature depending on target temperatures and trip states met so it will add interrupts which is also source for stutters when running too hot.
